Leaving Tumblr

I have decided to leave Tumblr. While I still think Tumblr is a great place to share what you feel, I don’t think it’s the right platform to express myself. Thank you to anyone who happened to like or reblog my posts, I appreciated your readership!

But seriously,
Thank YOU to my wonderful friends who contributed. $222 by 2/22 is nothing without them. It doesn’t matter if my goal was $20000 or $2, or how big or small their donations were. Every contribution literally felt like a personal gift to myself. I appreciated the fact that they would even pause what they were doing to take out their wallets to support a cause I believe in - fueling microfinance institutions to empower hard working people in hard situations.

Plate tectonics and a need for scientific literacy

  • (Watching CNN newscaster explain plate movement that resulted in Japan's earthquake)
  • Mom: So the plate stopped under Japan, that means no more earthquakes right?
  • Me: Well, not exactly. The plate is stll moving, just more slowly than before.
  • Mom: What?
  • Me: Yeah, the entire earth is made up of floating plates that are gradually moving. When they hit each other, we get volcanoes, mountains, and earthquakes. That's why it makes sense that New Zealand also had an earthquake a month ago. We're all on the same plate that's been slowly moving against other ones.
  • Mom: I don't believe that.
  • Me: Uh...it's not something you can choose to believe. It's scientifically proven, like gravity.
  • Mom: Allah made the earth.
  • Me: Allah made the earth...with plates.
